Talking about a 'Little Golden Book' last week, got me thinking about the broad range of artistic talent that goes into illustrating these wonderful little books.
Two of my all time favourites has to be Gustaf Tenggren and Eloise Wilkin, but then there is Richard Scarry, Corinne Malvern, Tibor Gergely and the wonderful Feodar Rojankovsky... and so many more :)
Have you ever wondered why, when most lovely vintage editions sell for around A$12 each, some command quite substantial sums? Well, it's all about scarcity and condition. What we have to realise is that some of these adorable books have been around since the very first 12 titles were printed in 1942!
My most expensive 'Little Golden Book' is "Tammy" written by Kathleen Daly and illustrated by Ada Salvi. The price of this book reflects the condition - being complete, all the cut-outs are present and in very good condition, and the book itself is in good, clean, tight condition. So many of these little gems are scribbled on or torn, with missing pages etc. To find an edition from 1974 in such good overall condition is quite hard...truly Golden!
